Apparatus for cleaning root crops e.g. sugar beet end pieces and fragments removed in a cleaning operation comprises a tank 2 having means 9 at its bottom end to supply an upward flow of water, an overflow 3 from the tank connected with a downwardly directed water outflow passage 4, and at least one rotary comb 5 mounted for rotation at the top of the outflow passage 4 to form a cover for the passage and providing means whereby cleaned root crops are thrown from the apparatus through an opening 15. Beet end pieces and fragments together with stones, sand, earth, leaves, straw' grass and other debris are fed to the tank 2 by a supply worm 13. Stones and other dense impurities drop through an outlet 2a into an outlet 12, whilst sand and earth eventually settle into a tank 10 and are removed. The water flow is directed obliquely upwards and the beet fragments are carried with the grass and leaves along the overflow 3 to the combs 5. These combs are formed by toothed discs spaced on rollers 6 so that they intermesh. Alternatively spiked discs or rollers may be employed. The grass, leaves and straw are taken up by the combs 5 and are carried with the water, which also clears the combs, away in the direction of the arrow 14, whilst the beet fragments, which are too large to pass between adjacent discs, are thrown out of the opening 15. The two combs 5 are rotated in the same direction by an electric motor, the second comb encountered by the flow through the apparatus preferably being rotated at a higher peripheral speed than the first to break up any tangled grass and straw.
