Abstract

The invention comprises: (a) hydroquinones of the general formula <FORM:0928161/IV(a)/1> (b) benzoquinones of the general formula <FORM:0928161/IV(a)/2> (n representing an integer from 1 to 5 in both formulae); (c) the preparation of hydroquinones of the general formula given in (a), but in which n represents an integer from 1 to 10, by condensing 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methylhydroquinone with an alcohol of the general formula <FORM:0928161/IV(a)/3> or <FORM:0928161/IV(a)/4> in the presence of an acidic condensing agent; (d) the preparation of benzoquinones of the general formula given in (b), but in which p n represents an integer from 1 to 10, by treating the corresponding hydroquinones with a mild oxidizing agent; and (e) the combination of processes (c) and (d). The benzoquinones possess Coenzyme Q activity. 2,3-Dimethoxy-5-methylhydroquinone is prepared by reducing 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-benzoquinone, e.g. with hydrogen in the presence of a palladium, platinum or Raney nickel catalyst, sulphur dioxide, sodium hydrosulphite, zinc and acetic acid, or sodium borohydride.
