Abstract

927,583. Tunnel kilns. FETOK G.m.b.H. Feb. 19, 1962 [April 17, 1961], No. 6306/62. Drawings to Specification. Class 51 (2). In a cooling section of a tunnel kiln for firing articles composed of a silica refractory having a large dimension in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the kiln, the article is passed through a first cooling zone, then through an intermediate cooling zone, both zones being longer than said dimension of article and finally through a second cooling zone, the cooling rate in the intermediate zone being substantially constant along its length and of such a value that the quartz transformation point is passed at the lowest possible cooling rate, the cooling rate in the first cooling zone being not more than 2¢ times the cooling rate in the intermediate zone at a point situated at a distance equal to said dimension of the article from the commencement of the intermediate zone, and the cooling rate at exit from the first cooling zone and at entry to the second cooling zone being substantially the same as the cooling rate in the intermediate zone.
