In a method of controlling a process for the thermal treatment of a solid material on a travelling grate as described in the parent Specification, the measurement of temperatures at the three closelyspaced consecutive points is dispensed with, and the speed of the grate is varied solely by reference to the measured temperature at the fourth point. It is stated that the length l of the exhaust gas temperature curve between the end M of its substantially linear section and the point where its maximum is attained is substantially constant. Accordingly, the speed of the travelling grate is varied such that the exhaust gas temperature at a point roughly midway along the length of the grate is maintained at a constant level, which constant level ensures that the thermal process will just be completed at the discharge end of the travelling grate.
