Abstract

927,349. Mercury and other conducting- liquid switches. JOHN THOMPSON-KENNICOTT Ltd. June 16, 1960 [June 16, 1959], No. 20674/59. Class 38 (5). The electrical path through a conductive liquid flow system is interrupted by passing the liquid into an insulating container 1 through a nozzle 2 and causing non-conductive gas, for example, air, to impinge thereon from a nozzle 3 arranged at right angles to nozzle 2. The liquid is broken up into discrete droplets electrically isolated from each other which then coalesce and collect in the part 4 of the container 1, from which they flow via outlet pipe 5. Gas escapes from container 1 through a vent 6. The container 1 may be made from a synthetic resin material or from sheet metal provided with an insulating layer of, for example, rubber. The nozzles 2 and 3 may be disposed at other than 90 degrees, but the angle is preferably between 30 and 145 degrees. If the container 1 is of lined metal the nozzle 2 must be insulated therefrom.
