Abstract
A metal-free or a complex metal phthalocyanine is chlorinated or chlorinated and brominated by reaction with pyrosulphuryl chloride in a melt composed essentially of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. An inorganic salt, thionyl chloride and a halogen carrier such as sulphur monochloride may also be present. Friedel-Crafts catalysts mentioned are aluminium chloride, aluminium bromide, ferric chloride, zinc chloride and antimony trichloride. Chlorination occurs unless an alkali-metal bromide, ammonium bromide, cuprous bromide or a bromide of a Group II metal of the Periodic Table such as calcium or magnesium bromide is present and/or unless aluminium bromide is used as the Friedel-Crafts catalyst when chlorination and bromination occurs. Examples are given.
