Abstract

An electrostatic spray gun, which may be used to spray coat a workpiece such as a length of tubing with paint, lacquer or varnish, comprises a spray emitting member whose operative surface is flared outwardly towards a spray discharge edge, means for rotating the emitting member about its longitudinal axis, liquid supply means for feeding liquid to the surface, and an air discharge system adjacent the discharge edge for creating a whirling mass of air to enclose discharged spray. The air may be rotated in the opposite direction to the spray emitting member. Fig. 1 shows a rotatable emitting member 10 supplied with liquid from a centrally positioned conventional compressed air spray gun and surrounded by an air discharge system 25 having skewed nozzles 32 to whirl the air. A cable 30 connects the assembly to a high potential source. Fig. 4 shows a flared spray emitting member 75, rotated by an air turbine 61, supplied with liquid through a fitting 86 and a fine tube 88 and surrounded by an air discharge tube 92 having air whirling vanes 95. Air is supplied to the tube 92 and also to the interior of the emitter 75 both from the turbine, via passage 70, and also from an air source connected at 71. The air enters the emitter interior through a clearance space 82 and apertures 84. Fig. 6 shows a modification where the turbine air escapes at 701, air to surround the spray is supplied through conduits 97, 971, and no air is supplied to the emitter interior. The spray gun liquid feed of Fig. 1 may be substituted by a liquid feed as shown in Figs. 4 and 6. Reference is made to <PICT:0926940/III/1> <PICT:0926940/III/2> <PICT:0926940/III/3> metal spray guns and to various modifications where some of the parts, e.g. the entire spray emitting member, just its edge or the air discharge means are of electrically insulating material, the high potential being applied to the noninsulating parts. It is stated that either a solid circle spray pattern or a doughnut shape may be obtained. Specification 901,969 and U.S.A. Specification 2,533,953 are referred to.
