[Also in Group XXIV] In liquid-dispensing apparatus adapted to dispense a plurality of different mixtures of two liquids and in which the total cost of liquid dispensed in a dispensing operation is indicated on a counter, variable speed transmission gearing is controlled electromagnetically. As shown, in Fig. 1, in a fuel pump capable of delivering five different blends of two liquid fuels, meters A, B for the liquids drive a main shaft 1 carrying a cone of nine gears. Three shafts 4, one for each digit of the various possible unit prices are provided, each shaft 4 carrying nine rockable brackets 7 each of which carries a gear 8 capable of engagement with the corresponding gear of the cone and meshing permanently with a gear 6 fixed to the associated shaft 4. The outputs of the shafts 4 are combined in a differential which drives a cost counter 5. The brackets 7 are controlled by electromagnets 11 each of which is connected to one of 27 switches on a fixed disc 12, the switches being arranged in the three rows of nine corresponding to the three digit unit price. Mounted coaxially with the disc 12 is a rotatable disc 13 carrying five sets of three grooves, each groove carrying a sliding pin 14 which is set in an appropriate position corresponding to the digit of the unit price of the blend with which it is associated. In operation, the disc 13 is rotated to set the mixture proportionating device (not shown) and simultaneously to align the appropriate set of grooves on the disc 13 with the switches on the disc 12, the pins 14 closing those switches corresponding to the unit price of the selected blend thereby engaging the corresponding gears 8 with the gear cone on the shaft 1.
