Abstract

926,589. Blow moulding hollow articles. MARRICK MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Sept. 13, 1961 [Sept. 13, 1960], No. 31594/60. Class 87(2). A discrete length of thermoplastic tubing is heated and then introduced into a blow mould 26. The sequence of operations is as follows: the tube lengths are loaded by a loading device 5 on to successive mandrels 6 detachably carried on an intermittent chain conveyer 11 and carried into a heating oven 1 where the mandrels 6 are rotated to assist uniform heating. The mandrels are transferred to the moulds 26 by a mould loader 7 comprising a star wheel 50 having jaws to receive the mandrels and a shuttle 59 to transfer the mandrels from the star wheel 50 to one of four moulds 26 on a rotary turret 2. The mould plattens 27 then close about the mandrels 6 and air is automatically supplied to the interior of the mandrel. A cooling medium may be circulated around the mould. The turret 2 is indexed through 270 degrees and the finished article removed on its mandrel by a mould unloader 8 comprising a pair of intermeshing star wheels 57, 70 one of which 57 has jaws to receive the mandrel and the other 70 of which engages the moulded article which is stripped from the mandrel by relative rotation between said star wheels 57, 70. The articles are conveyed to a discharge location and the empty mandrels 6 are conveyed to the loading device 5 along a guide 80. Any mandrels still carrying mishapen articles are automatically fed into a reject channel 87 communicating with the guide 80 and substitute mandrels are fed into the guide 80 from a storage channel 90. The detection and replacement of mandrels is by means of microswitches. Multiwalled articles may be produced by successive loading of tubes of different material or by loading composite tubes on to the mandrel.
