Abstract

2-(31- or 41-carboxyphenylamino)-4,6-di- or -4,5,6-tri-chloropyrimidines are prepared by condensing 3- or 4-aminobenzoic acid with 2,4,6-trichloropyrimidine or 2,4,5,6-tetrachloropyrimidine. The preparation of the corresponding acid chlorides by reaction with thionyl chloride is also specified.ALSO:The invention comprises vat dyes of formula <FORM:0925998/IV(a)/1> wherein A is the residue of a vattable compound free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups, as hereinafter defined, which contains 3 to 8 condensed rings, X is a chlorine atom or a methyl group, Z is a hydrogen or chlorine atom and n is 1 or 2. A "vattable compound" is a compound which can be converted by reduction into a leuco-form or vat having a better affinity for natural or regenerated cellulose fibres than in the non-reduced and can be reconverted by oxidation into the original chromophoric system. Suitable vattable compounds are dyes of the anthraquinone series which contain 3-8 condensed carbocyclic or heterocyclic rings or a plurality of anthraquinone units, perylene tetracarboxylic acid series and thioindigoid series. The dyes are prepared by condensing a suitable vattable compound containing at least one acylatable amino group with a pyrimidine derivative of formula:- <FORM:0925998/IV(a)/2> (see Group IV(b)). In an example 5:51-diamino-1:11-dianthrimidecarbazole is condensed with the acid chloride of 2-(31-carboxyphenylamino)-4:6-dichloropyrimidine to give the dye of probable formula:- <FORM:0925998/IV(a)/3> Further examples are given.
