Abstract

A thixotropic composition comprises a liquid hydrocarbon vehicle, e.g. oleum spirits and a zinc soap, the said composition being prepared by mixing together a fatty acid material having a solidification point of at least 75 DEG F. and zinc oxide in an amount sufficient to neutralize the free fatty acids in the said fatty acid material, heating the mixture at a temperature not exceeding 160 DEG F. until neutralization is completed, adding a liquid hydrocarbon vehicle before or after heating and cooling the product to form the desired composition as a thixotropic gel. The preserved fatty acid material is a tall oil heads fraction, e.g. "Acintol" (Registered Trade Mark), "Unitol" (Registered Trade Mark) and Crofatol, which heads fraction may contain saturated (stearic acid) and unsaturated (oleic and linoleic acids) fatty acids, unsaponifiable matter and rosin acids. A pigment, e.g. aluminium flakes or powder, iron oxide, carbon black, titanium dioxide and chromium oxide may be added before or after the neutralization step. A drying oil may be present in the composition. Steel structures, e.g. bridges, may be coated by spraying or dipping.
