Abstract
925,413. Generating combustion products under pressure. GARRETT CORPORATION. Sept. 28, 1959 [Sept. 29, 1958], No. 32897/59. Class 51 (1). A combustion apparatus such as for a gas turbine engine is provided with means for causing the combustion gases to flow generally axially through an annular passageway and with means for introducing a liquid coolant into the combustion gases by injecting the coolant radially outwardly from the inner periphery of the annular passageway and with further means for causing the mixture of combustion gases and coolant to flow centripetally towards the axis of the chamber whilst swirling about that axis. The apparatus shown comprises an air-jacketed combustion chamber 1 having an outer casing 28 and an inner flame tube 30, to which air under pressure is supplied through inlet duct 2 and fuel through inlet duct 32. The flame tube has air inlet openings 34 in the wall thereof. The chamber 1 has an end wall 10 having a central opening 11, the wall 10 being secured to the outer casing 28 and the flame tube 30 by means of a ring member 27 and bolts 26; a combustion gasoutlet duct 25 is secured to a flange 23 on the end wall. Air under pressure from the inlet 3 is supplied through branch 4 to a reservoir 5 to pressurize liquid coolant such as wateralcohol contained therein. The coolant passes through ducts 6 and 20 to a distribution chamber 7 disposed within the flame tube at the outlet end thereof. The chamber 7 is formed by a disc member 9 having a cylindrical flange 12 to which is secured a cover-plate 15, the flange 12 being formed with radially-directed orifices 17 through which liquid coolant is ejected into the combustion gases flowing through the annular passage formed between the flange 12 and the flame tube wall 30. The wall 9 of the chamber 7 is also formed on its lower surface with a series of swirl vanes 21 between which the mixture of combustion gases and coolant passes being caused thereby to swirl with a radially inward component towards the axis. Any particles of the coolant not vaporized are thereby flung outwardly and become vaporized before discharging with the combustion gases through the outlet 11. The air under pressure may be supplied from a storage bottle.
