Abstract
924,351. Copying methods and apparatus. W. RITZERFELD, and G. RITZERFELD. May 5, 1961 [May 25, 1960], No. 16361/61. Class 98 (1). A method for use in the production of a copy of an original text comprises the steps of photographically exposing to the original text a sheet having a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion, developing the sheet in a tanning developer, drying or partly drying the developed sheet, placing the emulsion side of the developed sheet into contact with the layer side of a hectographic-ink transfer sheet, and subjecting the sheets to an infra-red irradiation, the imageareas of the developed sheet being infra-red absorbing by virtue of the separated silver therein, the layer of the transfer sheet being caused by the infra-red irradiation to melt at regions thereof which contact the image-areas of the developed sheet and adhere to the said developed sheet at the said areas. In a modification of this method the hectographic inktransfer sheet has superimposed on its transfer layer a layer comprising a thermoplastic synthetic resin, said resin having a melting point below that of the -ransfer layer. Apparatus for use in performing the above methods is shown in Fig. 1. An exposed photographic sheet 46 placed in a tray 7 is fed through a tank 5 of tanning developer 6 by pairs of driven rollers 24, 25, 26, and 27 and by guides 15 and 16. The developed sheet is then substantially dried as it passes between a heated drying plate 17 and a guide plate 18, engages with a turnedover end 48 of a transfer sheet 47 lying on a table 8 and moves in superposition therewith between driven rollers 28, 29. The contacting sheets are exposed to I-R radiation by lamps 23 as they pass between a transparent guide table 19 and a white reflection plate 20, are pressed firmly together as they pass between driven pressure rollers 30, 31 and are then ejected from the apparatus housing 4 on to a delivery table 9. Lamps 23 are cooled by a fan 14 and the apparatus includes light shades 21, 22. In a modification (Fig. 2), not shown, the layers 23, plates 19 and 20 and rollers 29, 31 are replaced by a roller with axially arranged lamp acting simultaneously as a feed and pressure roller and as an infra-red lamp.
