Abstract

923,969. Roadway expansion joints; bridges. METALASTIK Ltd. Feb. 17, 1961 [March 22, 1960], No. 10202/60. Classes 20(1) and 20(4). An expansion joint provided between a roadway section 10 and an adjacent roadway section or a bridge section 11 comprieses a body of rubber 21 held in a state of compression between the two sections, the body having an upper surface substantially in the plane of the upper surfaces of the sections and being shaped in cross-section so as to tend to buckle downwardly under the compressive forces, and support means under the body and supporting the body against downward buckling, the support means maintaining the upper surface substantially in the plane of the upper surfaces of the sections, at least within the normal range of expansion of the sections. In the illustrated embodiment the support means comprise a pair of cast-iron comb members 28, 29, each secured to one of the sections and having intercalating teeth 32, 33. The upper surfaces of the teeth are horizontal over the portions 40 adjacent their roots and are upwardly inclined towards their free ends over the portions 41, thereby defining a trough-like support for the rubber body 21 which widens and deepens as a result of relative movement of the combs during the initial stages of expansion of the sections 10, 11, so as to maintain the upper surface of the body 21 substantially coplanar with the surfaces of the sections 10, 11. During further expansion of the sections 10, 11, the depth of the rubber body 21 is held constant over its central portion by the horizontal portions 40 of the teeth 32, 33, whilst continued downward bulging is permitted at each side of the central portion. The rubber body contains reinforcing rods 51. In one modification the body 21 at all times remains clear of the horizontal parts 40 of the teeth 32, 33 and in another modification the body 21 at all times remains in contact with horizontal parts 40 of the teeth. In another modification the comb structures may be replaced by a non-adjustable support for the rubber body. A reinforcing rod may also be provided extending longitudinally of the rubber body in its mid longitudinal plane 52. The intercalated teeth have a clearance one from another to permit the joint to be made between road sections at a small angle to each other.
