Abstract

923,963. Non-woven fabrics. CHICOPEE MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. Aug. 7, 1959 [May 9, 1958], No. 14997/58. Class 120(3). In a method of re-orienting the fibres of an unbonded web in which the fibres lie in one direction by stretching or contracting the web in a direction normal to the original direction of the fibres without substantially changing the dimensions of the web in the said original direction, the stretching or contracting is effected by causing the web to adhere to that part of the surface of an endless moving belt which is continuously stretched or contracted laterally. In a case where the web is stretched, it is caused to adhere by liquid applied by an adjustable roller 28 supplied by jets 31 to a belt 26 attached to V-belts 25 driven by pairs of pulleys on shafts 21 23 the pair on shaft 23 being further apart than those on shaft 21. Excess liquid is removed by a roller 30. The belt may be of rubber, synthetic elastomer or elasticized fabric. The liquid may be water or an organic compound or, where a permanent impregnant is wanted, an aqueous solution or emulsion. The web may be made to adhere by the use of a second extensible belt above the first, in which case impregnant such as polyvinyl acetate may be printed-on at spaced intervals after leaving the belts and be activated by drying. The web may be contracted, or alternately stretched and contracted, and dried to produce wrinkles to improve the appearance and utility of the material. Specification 843,041 is referred to.
