Abstract
923,958. Extruding; billet-piercing. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 26, 1961, No. 38349/61. Class 83 (4). A press for the hot-working of a metal billet has a billet container mounted in a compartment of a container holder, the compartment being provided with an internal lining 28 which, in co-operation with the wall of the billet container, provides an air screen to restrict transfer of heat to the container holder. The press which may be an extrusion press, comprises a main frame consisting of two pressure platens connected by tension columns, an hydraulic unit mounted on one of the platens for driving a pressing stem towards a die mounted on the other platen, and a multiple billet container holder rotatably mounted on one of the tension columns so as to enable each billet container in turn to be positioned axially of the die and pressing stem. The multiple billet container holder, (Fig. 1), comprises three container-holders cast as an integral unit, each holder having three arcuate plates 28 which, in conjunction with the billet container, provide an annular insulating air space open to atmosphere at each end; the plates may be polished to form a heatreflecting surface. Outward of the air-cooling annulus there are provided two liquid-cooling circuits. The first, which cools the outer surface of the arcuate plates 28, has an inlet pipe 37 leading to chamber 32, which has an outlet pipe 35 leading to chamber 33, and so on through pipe 36, chamber 34 and outlet pipe 39. The second liquid-cooling circuit comprises an inlet pipe 43 from which liquid flows clockwise through successive chambers 23 interconnected by ports 20 to an outlet pipe 42. Flow rates in each circuit are controlled by thermocouples in each outlet pipe feeding amplified signals to solenoid-controlled inlet valves 70, 74, Fig. 3, and all liquid inlet and outlet flows are led to and from the rotating carrier through a suitable distributer ring placed about the mounting column. The billet container is heated prior to billet loading by insertion of a dummy billet or by a built-in electric heater, or by gas or oil beating. Specification 923,959 is referred to.
