Abstract
923,872. Valves. INTERNATIONAL BASIC ECONOMY CORPORATION. May 15, 1961, No. 17616/61. Class 135. A fluid-flow control valve comprises a body 16 having a chamber 19 connected with an inlet 11 and an outlet 12, the chamber being adapted to receive interchangeable valve assemblies 24 having either a closure member 30 of the poppet or plunger type, the closure member being reciprocable by a piston 39 so as to open or close communication between the inlet and outlet. As shown in Fig. 2, the closure member is in the form of a hollow plunger 30 having a number of slots 34 in its wall. The plunger slides within a cage 26 retained in the valve body 16 by a cap 35, the latter forming a cylinder 38 for the piston 39. A second identical valve assembly 25 is mounted in the body and both are arranged to control a piston-andcylinder device 46, 47, Fig. 5, the valve assembly 25 being arranged to control the exhaust of the piston. In operation, fluid is fed under pressure from a pump 51 to the inlet 11 and also to the cylinder 38 of the piston 39 via passages 56, 57, 59, 60 and pilot valves 49, 50, thus maintaining both plunger valves closed. Upon operation of the pilot valve 49 to its alternative position, the pressure in the cylinder 38 is exhausted via passage 58 to a tank 54. The pressure in the inlet 11 then opens the plunger valve 30 and allows fluid to actuate the piston 47 via outlet 12 and passage 53. When the piston reaches its extreme position, the valve 49 is returned to the position shown in Fig. 5, and the piston is hydraulically locked in its extreme position. To return the piston, the valve 50 is actuated to vent the cylinder 38 of the plunger valve assembly 25 and thus permit the fluid in the cylinder 46 to be returned to the tank via passages 53, 55. The pilot valve may be manually or solenoid operated. The plunger valve assemblies 26, 27 may be replaced by poppet valve assemblies 62 as shown in Fig. 6. The cage 63, retains a seat member 74 on which a closure member 71 co-operates. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the plunger 93 is connected to a spindle 95 to which is secured pistons 97, 104 operating in cylinders 98, 105 respectively. In operation, fluid under pressure is fed through an inlet 82 and, via a restricted port 103 and passages 100, 101, into a cylinder 98 to act on the piston 97 and thereby maintain the plunger valve closed. To open the valve, fluid is fed to the underside of the piston 104 via a port 108 and thereby opens the valve. The plunger valve assembly shown in Fig. 8 may also be replaced by a poppet type valve similar to the one previously described.
