Abstract

923,762. Needling fibrous batts. CHATHAM MANUFACTURING CO. May 10, 1961 [May 26, 1960], No. 16958/61. Class 42 (2). A non-woven fabric is produced from a web 10 of loosely matted fibres by advancing the web intermittently between opposed sets 22, 24 of needles and causing the sets of needles to penetrate opposed surfaces of the web when it is stationary. The web 10 which may be formed from at least two layers 16, 18, Fig. 6, separated by a loosely woven fabric 20 is fed intermittently by a conveyer 66 to the needle sets 22, 24 which sets alternately penetrate the web 10 at an actute angle to the direction of movement thereof. The needles 30, 32 having barbs 48 are mounted on boards 26, 28 and are adapted to pass through apertures (not shown) in guide plates 36, 38 curved as shown. The plates 36, 38 are carried between plates 56 having slots 58, 60 therein to carry shafts 62, 70 respectively. The shaft 70 carries an out-feed roller 72 with which a weighted roller 80 co-operates. When the shaft 70 is rotated in step-by-step increments by a one-way clutch and brake assembly (not shown) mounted thereon a pulley 64 on the shaft 62 is intermittently rotated through chain 76 entrained around sprockets 74, 78, 68 so that the conveyer 66 is moved intermittently. A link 88 pivotally connects a crank 86 to a disc 89 keyed to a shaft 90 rotated by a motor 98 so that the crank 86 is oscillated. The crank 86 is connected to the drive member of the one-way clutch so that clockwise movement thereof causes rotation of the shaft 70 and therefore of the roller 72 and also movement of the conveyer 66. During counterclockwise movement of the crank 86 the shaft 70 is stationary. The needle boards 26, 28 are mounted on arms 100, 108 pivoted at 102, 110 to vertical standards 104 and are connected together by rods 112 to move in the same direction simultaneously. Crank arms 120 coupled to cranks 122 carried on a shaft 124 are pivoted to the board 28. The shaft 124 is driven by the shaft 90 to cause continuous up and down movement of the boards 26, 28. The operation is timed so that the web is moved after one set of needles has left the web and before the penetration of the second set. The needled batt produced by this apparatus has rows extending lengthwise thereof. The fibres in the rows extend from one surface of the batt to the other and are entangled with fibres in the other surface and vice versa, and some of the fibres between the surfaces are interentangled, Fig. 14.
