Abstract

In needling fibrous webs to effect compaction of the fibres the relative disposition between the needle and the web is adjusted such that the needle enters and emerges on the same side of the web during the penetration stroke of the needle reciprocation. Apparatus for effecting the compaction may comprise a curved needle of trihedral cross section and having barbs on at least one of the pieces. Alternatively, the web may be curved round rollers and straight needles are used to penetrate the web on the curve. In a further embodiment, the web is penetrated by both curved and straight needles to effect compaction in three dimensions. The stroke of the reciprocation may be built up of overlapping reciprocatory increments to produce chain-like bundles of fibres.
