Abstract

Fibres, foils, textiles and similar substrates containing at least one reactive hydrogen atom per molecule are dyed with dyestuffs containing at least one reactive hydrogen whereby the dyestuff is linked covalently to the substrate by means of compounds of the general formula <FORM:0922683/IV(a)/1> wherein x and y are whole numbers and A is a hydrogen or halogen atom, at least 2 of the A's being halogen atoms. Preferably y is 2 and the halogen atoms are Cl or Br. Specified crosslinking agents are the dihydrochlorides of N,N,N1,N1-tetrakis-(b -chloroethyl) - ethylene diamine and the corresponding derivative of hexamethylene diamine. Specified substrates are fibres of cotton, wool and polyamide. The dyestuffs may be soluble or insoluble in water and may contain groups such as amino, imino and hydroxy which bear the reactive hydrogen atoms. The cross-linking agent may be applied in the presence of sodium hydroxide, together with the dyestuff or after dyeing has taken place. Examples are given.
