Abstract

An oral preparation for the treatment of gastro-intestinal infections in humans and animals comprises kanamycin, aminopentamide (4 - dimethylamino - 2,2 - diphenylvaleramide) having antispasmodic-anticholinergic properties, pectin and an absorbent e.g. kaolin or attapulgite. The aminopentamide is preferably used in the form of the hydrogen sulphate and the kanamycin may be the free base or a nontoxic acid addition salt with an organic or inorganic acid e.g. hydrochloride, sulphate, nitrate, citrate, maleate, malate, tartrate, benzoate, cinnamate, ascorbate, acetate, picrate, phytate, levopimaric-6,8a-cis-endosuccinate, sulphamate, glycolate and mandelate. Kanamycin A, kanamycin B, or a mixture thereof, may be used. The preparation may be in the form of an aqueous or oil suspension containing suitable suspending agents. Optional ingredients are buffers, preservatives, fillers, diluents, lubricants, colouring agents, flavouring agents, sweetening agents and pharmaceutical additives in general. An aqueous suspension contains per 15 cc. of suspension, from 150-412 mg. kanamycin, 0.1 to 0.2 mg. of amino pentamide hydrogen sulphate, 75 to 150 mg. of pectin and 1500 to 3000 mg. of kaolin or attapulgite.
