Abstract
Veterinary and pharmaceutical compositions for oral use comprise at least one tetracycline type antibiotic and at least one of the compounds; glucosamine, glucosamine salts, N-acyl glucosamines. Specified antibiotics are tetracycline, oxytetracycline; chlortetracycline, bromtetracycline, 6 - demethyl-chlortetracycline, 6 - demethyltetracycline, 6-deoxy-6-demethyltetracycline in their amphoteric forms and as salts with acids and bases, as complexes with polyvalent metal compounds and as derivatives such as esters which have similar biological activity as the parent antibiotics. Specified glucosamine salts are those non-toxic salts formed from the base and organic or inorganic acids e.g. the phosphate, sulphate, hydrochloride, hydrobromide, citrate, tartrate, succinate and ralicylate. The N-acyl glucosamines may be those in which the acyl group is a lower (C1 to 6) aliphatic acyl group e.g. acetyl, propionyl, butyryl. The ratio by weight of antibiotic to glucosamine compound may be from about 3:1 to 1:3 and is preferably about 1:1.
