Abstract

An aqueous therapeutic suspension comprises terpin hydrate, glyceryl monostearate, and a monostearate of a condensation polymer having the formula H(OCH2.CH2)nOH wherein n is a positive integer of from 30 to 50, e.g. polyoxyl 40 stearete U.S.P. The content of terpin hydrate (preferably micronized) may be from about 0.3% (w/v) to about 10% and is preferably 1.7%. The content of monosteatate ester of the condensation polymer may vary from about 0.05% to about 0.5% (preferably 0.1%) and the glyceryl monostearate content may vary from about 0.2% to about 1% (preferably 0.5%). Antitussive and other active ingredients which may be present are morphine and codeine derivatives and compounds such as narcotine salts and d-methorphan hydrobromide (preferred antitussive); antihistamines, e.g. pyrilamine maleate, diphenhydramine hydrochloride, premethazine hydrochloride; analgesics and antipyrectics, e.g. salicylamide, acetophenetidin, N - acetyl - p - aminophenol; vitamins, e.g. of the B complex group and ascorbic acid; dicongestants, e.g. phenylephrine hydrochloride; other expectorants, e.g. NH4Cl and guaicol compounds. Supplementary ingredients and adjuvants may be added, e.g. surfactants, suspending and viscosity increasing, sweetening and buffering agents, preservatives, flavours and dyes. The composition may be prepared by dispersing the glyceryl monostearate in the aqueous vehicle with the aid of polyoxyl 40 stearate, preferably with the use of heat, and adding the terpin hydrate and other ingredients.
