Abstract

922,492. Coating by vapour deposition. NATIONAL RESEARCH CORPORATION. April 1, 1960, No. 11603/60. Class 82. In a process for producing a shiny metal coating on paper by vapour deposition, a web of paper is first exposed to an intermediate vacuum for removal of entrapped air and is then moved through a high vacuum coating zone while it is engaged on one side by a moving surface, the other side being exposed to a metal vapour source. The paper is exposed to the high vacuum for less than one second so that it may lose very little of its water content. As shown, paper 16 is passed from a feed roll in intermediate vacuum chamber 10 over cooled drum 26 into high vacuum chamber 18 where it is exposed to aluminium vapours 20a emitted from molten aluminium contained in induction heated carbon crucible 20. Coated paper passes back into chamber 10 to be collected on a takeup roll. If desired, (a) the paper may be provided with a preliminary coating of e.g. polyvinyl acetate, latex, phenol-, urea- or melamineformaldehyde, alkyd resin, silicone resin, epoxy resin, lacquer, varnish or water-glass; (b) the drum may be replaced by a moving belt; and (c) the paper may be passed from the atmosphere into the coating chamber through a series of vacuum seals into zones of increasingly high vacuum, and conversely taken out of the chamber in this way.
