Abstract

The invention comprises steroids of the general formulae <FORM:0922469/IV(a)/1> wherein Z represents a cyano or alkanoyl radical, and R represents an a - or b -hydrogen atom; and the preparation of the compounds of the above general formula wherein Z represents a cyano radical by treating a cholestan-3-one of the general formula <FORM:0922469/IV(a)/2> wherein R has the above significance, with acetone cyanohydrin, and dehydrating the resulting 3-cyanohydrin with phosphorus oxychloride in a basic medium such as a tertiary amine medium and, if desired, separating the resulting isomers containing 2(3)- or 3(4)-unsaturation; and the preparation of the above compounds wherein Z represents an acyl radical by reacting the above 3-cyano compounds with an alkyl magnesium halide in an anhydrous organic solvent, and treating the resulting 3-ketoimines with dilute mineral acid.
