Abstract

922,339. Nuclear reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. May 3, 1961 [Feb. 3, 1960], No. 3909/60. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XIX] For testing creep of materials to be used in the pressure vessel of a nuclear reactor, a rod 1 of the material is held in tension by the superatmospheric pressure of the vessel acting on the plate 11 of a bellows to which one end of the rod is secured, the other end being held in a washer 18 anchored against the top of a sleeve 16. The sleeve has openings 20, 21 communicating with the pressure vessel and serving also for observation of fiducial marks x, y on the rod. The bellows are housed in a cup 4, 5 closed by flange 6, containing gas at low pressure. The whole assembly is placed in a channel provided in the core of the reactor so that the test rod will be subject to the same conditions of stress and irradiation as the pressure vessel.
