922,220. Railway vehicles' buffers or drawgear; shock absorbers. GARRINGTONS Ltd. March 10, 1960 [Feb. 18, 1959], No. 5557/59. Classes 103(5) and 108(3). A fluid operating shock absorber such as a railway vehicle buffer or drawgear comprises an outer cylinder having different diameter portions 10, 11, an annular reservoir 21 defined by walls 18, 19 and 20, a hollow plunger 15 slidable in nylon bearings 26, 28 in the wall 18 and the cylinder portion 11, a piston 33 integral with or mounted on the plunger and reciprocable in the fluid pressure chamber 23, and compressed air means or a recoil spring such as 30 for providing the recoil force. The space 29 may be filled through a valve 41 with air which is compressed when the plunger is buffed, or the spring 30 which may be of rubber-metal sandwich construction may be provided instead, the spring being prevented from bowing by the engagement of its plates 31 with the inside of the hollow plunger and with a rod 32. The internal diameter of the portion 10 of the outer cylinder is tapered inwardly and a spring pressed valve ring 35 may be lifted off the rear face of the piston 33 to open ports 34 on recoil. The chambers 21 and 23 are connected by a port 22 and the chamber 21 which is normally at atmospheric pressure is also connected by a passage 42 to an opening 43 near the plunger seal 27. The outside of the outer cylinder may be provided with cooling fins, and the back plate is held in position by a circlip 14.
