Abstract

922,211. Valves. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 22, 1961, No. 4536/61. Class 135. [Also in Group XIII] A valve comprises a piston 13, valve stem 15, a conical valve end 16 e.g. of stainless steel, and a bellows 14 attached to the piston 13 at one end and a plug 11 at the other. When valve 16 is open, steam condensate from a spaceheating system (see Group XIII) flows through a condensate chamber 1 and causes a liquid (e.g mineral oil) to expand in element 9. The expanding liquid forces the valve to move towards its seating 5. The valve will remain in a constant position when the temperature of the expansible liquid is constant. The position of valve seating 5 with respect to the valve end 16 is adjustable by means of a threaded portion 28 of the condensate chamber 1 and lock-nut 30. The expansible liquid is also controlled by the external atmospheric temperature of the space being heated which affects the volume of liquid in an external vessel 21. The relative volumes of vessel 21 and the element 9 are such, that the heat input to the space being heated is varied by movement of the valve in response to changes in the external atmospheric temperature in order to maintain the space temperature constant. If the external atmospheric temperature continues to increase after the valve end 16 is fully closed, the pressure of the liquid exceeds the pressure required to compress spring 34, and the element 9, tubular connector 20 and vessel 21 move back from the valve end 16 thereby avoiding possible damage to the bellows 14.
