Abstract
921,915. Sliver balling apparatus. WARNER & SWASEY CO. March 15, 1961, [April 28, 1960], No. 22499/62. Divided out of 921,914. Class 120 (1). The subject-matter of this Specification is identical with that described in Specification 921,914, but the claims are concerned with means sensing displacement of a sliver traversing guide from a predetermined ball-start position. The sliver traverse mechanism may be as described in Specification 917,072. During winding of the ball, the sliver guide member 38 reciprocated by an arm 41 is driven through gearing 47 and gears 50, 52. Gear 50 also meshes with a gear 135 on shaft 136 which is connected through an electromagnetic clutch with a motor operative during the doffing operation. Also fixed to the shaft 136 is a metallic electrically conductive control member 140, Fig. 9, having an insulated segment 142 set in the periphery of it. There is a unique position of segment 142 corresponding with the centre position of the guide member 38 and in this position a conductive plunger 143 is in contact with the segment and drive to the shaft 136 through the electromagnetic clutch is discontinued. With the plunger 143 in contact with the conductive periphery of the control member 140 the shaft 136 is driven. If a different system of gears were employed, the control member 140 could have two insulating segments. In other modifications the segments may be positioned to return the guide member 38 to any selected position. It is stated also that photo-electric or electromagnetic means may be utilized to sense the position of the control member 140.
