Abstract

921,857. Rollers. BLAW-KNOX CO. Jan. 17, 1962 [Jan. 30, 1961], No. 1684/62. Class 42 (2). [Also in Group XXXVI] The surface 37 of a roller for use in metal strip processing apparatus (see Group XXXVI) is composed of a regular pattern having from 50 to 500 raised portions 40 per square inch connected by continuous grooves 39 to provide a surface having an overall roughness of more than 100 micro-inches as determined by a profilometer. Preferably the overall roughness is about 300 micro-inches and the projections have a roughness of between 10 and 15 microinches. The ratio of the area of the grooves 39 to the area of the portions 40 is greater than 50%, preferably 85%, of the curved surface area. The roller may be made of steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, any convenient metal plated or clad with copper, nickel or chromium, or may be rubber covered metal rollers, the rubber having a hardness of at least 100 durometer. Copper rollers may be plated with chromium or nickel and used as electrodes. To form the roller the surface is first turned to size, then polished, then knurled, and in the case of metal rollers may be plated. Finally, the surface is polished.
