932,309. Guiding webs. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Dec. 1, 1961 [Dec. 7, 1960], No. 43054/61. Class 100 (1). [Also in Group IX] Apparatus (e.g. a roller) for handling and guiding a moving, continuous, elongated structure (e.g. a ribbon or film) has at least one of its surfaces which contact the structure made of ceramic, smoothly rounded nodules being formed on this surface to give it a roughness of 70 to 250 root mean square microinches. The ceramic used is preferably a mixture of the usual ceramic metal oxides with a predominance of chromic oxide in the mix. The ceramic may be flame-sprayed or arc-sprayed and the resulting surfaces are smoothed by brushing or tumbling in an abrasive slurry.
