Abstract
921,666. Vacuum pumps. FERRANTI Ltd. Dec. 6, 1961 [Dec. 23, 1960], No. 44287/60. Class 8(1). In a vacuum pump of the sorption type the sorption material e.g. dehydrated sodium alumino-silicate is confined within a container 1 Fig. 1 which is closed except for a valved conduit connection 8 and which is provided with at least one passage extending between apertures 5, 6 in the surface of the container whereby when it is immersed in coolant e.g. liquid nitrogen the latter is able to enter the passage without trapping air. As shown the container 1 is formed of inner and outer stainless steel cylinders 7, 2 and end closure members 3, 4 and encloses, a double-walled perforated copper member 10-12 serving to divide the sorption material 15 into radially spaced cylindrical layers adjacent the cooled walls 2, 7 of the container. In a modification the container 20 Fig. 2 comprises a steel cylinder 21 having end closures 22, 23 and four conduits 27 (only two of which are shown) extending between ports 25, 26 near the ends of the cylinder and into which liquid nitrogen enters and about which the sorption material 31 is disposed. The central portion of the container is occupied by a perforated copper cylinder 28 from which extend outwardly four radial passages 29 Fig. 3 (not shown).
