Abstract

921,478. Shrink sizing of fibrous plastics tubes. M. TADIELLO, and U. D. BELDA. July 12, 1961 [July 19, 1960], No. 25270/61. Class 87(2). Rigid porous tubes, for sheathing tubular antimonial lead electrodes for accumulators, are formed by heat shrinkage and setting of a limp fibrous plastic tube around a sizing core. The tube may be woven, knitted or plaited from vinyl and/or acrylonitrile polymer or co-polymer filament yarn. The sizing cores 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> &c. are circumferentially mounted around wheel 2 with axes parallel to main shaft 1. Wheel 2 is integral with shaft 1 at the other end of which is mounted integral disc 4 carrying one spool 6 of the limp plastic tube for each core 3. The limp plastic tube is manually fed on to core 3 as shaft 1 rotates. Core 3 is electrically heated by resistance heaters therein or by passage of current directly therethrough; the current is picked up from stationary conducting segment 14 by brush 10 over the fraction of a revolution corresponding to the angular width of 14. The tube cools and hardens over the remainder of a revolution when it is manually taken off core 3 and cut by heated wire 15.
