Abstract

921,392. Soot.blowers. DIAMOND POWER SPECIALTY CORPORATION. June 20, 1961 [June 20, 1960], No. 21579/60. Class 99(2). A soot-blower of the retractable or non- retractable type, for use in a multi-sootblower installation having a common master control box from which the operation of each soot blower is initiated in predetermined sequence, includes rotary means driven in timed relationship with the rotation of the blower nozzle or multi-jet jet tube, having a plurality of spaced actuating means corresponding in inter-spacing to one or a number of complete blowing cycles of the blower and control means, adapted to be operated by any one of said actuating means for causing the master control box to terminate the operation of the sootblower and to initiate operation of the next sootblower in sequence. As shown in Figs..1, 2 and 3 a nozzle tube 15, to which steam is delivered via. apertures 16 when the tube is advanced to the forward position thereof, is axially displaced and rotated by a screw 18 driven by a shaft 19 which carries a gear 20 driven through gears 21, 22 and 23 from a reversible electric motor 24; the latter can be uncoupled from the motor drive and the tube can be operated by a hand-wheel 56. To effect reversal of the motor an endless chain 25 runs on sprockets 26, 27 and 28, the sprockets 28 being secured to the shaft 19 and the sprockets 26, 27 being free-running, and has secured thereto two projecting pins or rollers 29, 30 spaced apart a predetermined distance to allow forward and rotary movements of the nozzle tube, there being disposed between the pins a spring-loaded, toggle action lever 31. When either pin engages the lever the latter is moved to alternative positions as determined by spaced abutments 32. The lever is mounted on a shaft 33 having secured thereto a lever 34 connected by links 35, 36 to an electric reversing switch 37 which controls energising of the motor 24. To control the number of blowing cycles carried out successively by each soot-blower, an electric micro-switch 38, connected through relay means to the master control box, has an arm 39 operated by pins 40 on a drum 41 rotatably mounted on the shaft 33 and driven in timed relationship to the blowing cycle movements of the nozzle tube so that the pins are brought into position to engage the arm 39 at the end of each blowing cycle. The pins are equally spaced around the drum 41 so that the switch 38 is actuated after each blowing cycle. By removing alternate pins the device will permit two successive blowing cycles to take place, before the switch is operated, and if groups of two pins are removed, three cycle operation will take place; two diametrically placed pins result in a six-cycle blowing operation. The rotary drum 41 is subjected to a step-by-step incremental drive taken from the movement of the lever 31 and effected by a ratchet wheel 42, secured to the shaft 33, and diametrically opposed pawls 43 carried by the drum. To restrain movement of the drum during the non effective throw of the lever, a spring-loaded ball 44 engages in a recess 45 at each pin position to provide a series of " click stops". When the soot-blower is of the non-retractable type, the pins 40 are mounted on the face of a gear driven from the shaft 19.
