Abstract
839,150. Winding; traverse mechanisms. SYNCRO MACHINE CO. Feb. 3, 1958 [Sept. 6, 1957], No 3517/58. Class 120(2) Driving mechanism for traverse means in winding machines comprises a rotatably mounted lead screw, a reciprooable guide having a nut engaging the lead screw, driving means including a pair of oppositely acting clutches each including a driving gear alternatively connectible to the lead screw and means driven at a predetermined speed for applying a series of successive driving impulses to the clutches to rotate them alternatively in opposite directions for each successive series, and selective means including an operator actuated by said nut, and a gear for alternatively co-operating with the driving gears for selectively controlling the driving means to cause said alternative rotations, the means driven at a predetermined speed for applying said driving pulses to the clutches including an adjustable stroke, crank operated rack bar, and means for preventing backlash movement of said lead screw during the period between driving pulses. One embodiment of the invention is shown. In operation, assuming that the traversing nut 22 is moving to the left and is about to reach the extreme left-hand position, as the nut moves to the left it comes into contact with flanged sleeve 82 and begins to move it towards the flanged sleeve 80 fixed to the shaft 62 thereby compressing the spring 84. When these sleeves engage the shaft 62 is moved to the left until the roller 100 is on the cylindrical portion of the collar 92 at the right hand end of the shaft 62. The compressed spring 84 will then kick the shaft 62 to its extreme left hand position bringing the gear 60 out of engagement with the gear 72 and into engagement with the gear 70. This action through unidirectional clutches reverses the drive to the lead screw 20 thus reversing the direction of movement of the nut 22. A similar action .occurs when the nut 22 reaches the other end of its traverse. The drive to the gear 60 is from a crank mechanism 54 through a rack 46 and gear 36 which mechanism by virtue of the unidirectional clutch drives from gears 70 and 72, imparts rotational pulses to the lead screw 20, the reverse movement of the rack 46 not being transmitted by the unidirectional clutches. The length of the stroke of the rack and therefore of the rotational pulses can be adjusted by the screw 52 and by the speed of rotation of the driving sprocket 58. The length of the traverse movement of the nut 22 is adjusted by positioning the sleeves 80 and 86 on the shaft 62 and locking them by set screws.
