Abstract

A saturated hydrocarbon polymeric material is stabilized with at least one compound selected from aromatic and aliphatic disulphides, mercaptans, aryl thioethers, aromatic phenolic thioethers and aliphatic thiuram disulphides, and at least one conjugated compound selected from compounds R-(X=X1-)nR1 (wherein X and X1 are CH- or N, R and R1 are conjugated cyclic radicals and n is greater than 2), condensed polynuclear compounds having greater than 3 unsaturated condensed rings, and quinones <FORM:0921306/IV(a)/1> (wherein [X] is any conjugated double bond system). The polymer may be a polymer or copolymer of ethylene, propylene, butene, 3-methyl butene, 4-methyl pentene, 4,4-dimethyl pentene, dodecene and 3-methyl pentene. The specified second components of the stabilizer are various 3 3,5,31,51-tetraalkyl-4,41-diphenoquinones or stilbene quinones, perylene, pentacene, naphthacene, b -carotene, 1,8-diphenyl-1,3,5,7-octatetraene and 1,6-diphenylhexatriene.
