[Also in Group XXV] An extensible paper yarn is made by moistening a paper ribbon to increase its pliability, folding it lengthwise to form two or more parallel superimposed portions and twisting the ribbon into a yarn which is then compacted by a compressive force acting parallel to the yarn axis and along a portion only of its outer surface whereby the maximum extensibility of the ribbon (and of the yarn product) in its longitudinal direction is increased e.g. in excess of 4%. As shown, Fig. 1a, a ribbon 15 is directed by guide rolls 17, 18, 19, through a moistening bath 20 of water to which lubricant may be added, is folded into a form 15b such as shown in Fig. 2 by passage through a die 21 and is twisted by and wound on a rotating and oscillating spool 25. Twisted yarn 15c, Fig. 1b, still in moist condition is fed over guide roll 27 and into the nip between a rotary drum 31 and the smooth outer surface of a resilient blanket 32 travelling around a press member 33 and tensioning guides 34, 35. The blanket 32 is accelerated around member 33 and decelerated in passing around drum 31 so that yarn 15c is shrunk and compacted. Yarn 15d emerging from compactor 30 passes over guide roll 40, tensioning rolls 46, through a breakage-detector 47 and is wound on a bobbin or yarn 45. Specification 727,261 is referred to.
