Abstract
921,153. Filling cigarette containers. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. April 14, 1959 [June 20, 1958], No. 12700/59. Class 94(1). [Also in Group XXX]. A device for depositing cigarettes issuing from a cigarette making machine into containers for use in a packaging machine, comprises a conveyer belt having a horizontal and a vertical run, and a further belt parallel to the vertical run, the lower ends of both vertical runs being moveable horizontally and vertically to discharge and distribute cigarettes in the containers. Cigarettes on a belt 2 are pushed on to a belt 6 by a plunger 4 to form two rows, the opposed end of which are engaged by a member 18 and belts 22, 24 to ensure alignment of the ends in each row. Each row is received by a belt 32 which has a horizontal feeding run over pulleys 34,36, a vertical run round pulleys 36,38 40 and a return run round pulleys 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 34. The pulleys 44, 48, 52, 56 are carried on a vertically slideable member 43 and pulleys 36, 40 are mounted on a horizontally traversing carriage 60. The vertical belt 68 is also mounted on the carriage 60 and its pulleys 63, 66 and pulley 38 are arranged for vertical movement relative to the carriage. When the carriage 60 moves to the right, as shown, or the pulleys 38, 63, 66 are raised, movement downwards of the member 43 retains the belt 32 taut. At the commencement of filling an opensided container 70, the discharge point between pulleys 38, 66 is at the bottom left hand corner, as shown in Fig. 2, and traverses to the right. The speed of return to the left is such that no cigarettes are deposited, the discharge run of the belt 32 lengthening at the same speed. The discharge point reciprocates and is raised by steps until the container is full. An empty container is indexed into position during a return run. The descent of the discharge point into the new container is at such a speed as to prevent deposit of cigarettes by lengthening of the vertical run of the belt 32, until the bottom of the container is reached. The containers are brought into filling position by a conveyer 86 which is sloped to ensure that cigarettes rest against their closed sides. During filling, the containers are given a slow movement (see Group XXX) to the left as shown in Fig. 3 to ensure depositing of the cigarettes adjacent the closed sides. The rapid indexing movement is initiated when the final upward step of the pulleys 38, 66 operates a switch, Fig. 4 (not shown). Flaps 74, 75 adjacent the belt discharge are movable to guide cigarettes into the container carriers at the extremes of belt travel. U.S.A. Specification 2,124,397 is referred to.
