Abstract
<PICT:0921097/III/1> <PICT:0921097/III/2> Fatty oils are deodorized in a plant the upper part of which is attached to column 1, and which comprises a vessel 2 divided into six compartments 3 to 8 by partitions 9 to 14 and pipe 15. Pipe 15 is connected at its upper end to pipe 17 which in turn is connected to the lower opening 18 of column 1. Oil to be deodorized passes down column 1 in the direction of arrow 19 down pipes 17 and 15 and through 20 into compartment 3. Openings 21 are provided in each of the partitions 9 to 13 so that the oil that enters compartment 3 through opening 20 can flow in turn through compartments 3 to 8, and be discharged from the apparatus through an overflow of compartment 8 by pipe 22. Each compartment contains a steam ejector 24 fed with steam through regulator 25, the flow of which is controlled by valve 26. Ejectors 24 open into ducts 27 which in turn open tangentially into vertically open cylinders 28; the steam leaving ejector 24 entrains the oil and intimately mixes with it so that the circulation rate within each compartment is greater than the overall circulation rate through the apparatus. The oil entering cylindrical wall 28 flows back to the compartment bottom, while the steam separates from the oil and rises to enter column 1 through the side openings 29 above the part 17 of pipe 15. To prevent the oil coming out of column 1 from passing through the side opening 29, the openings are provided with edges 30 which slope downwards towards the interior of the pipe.
