Abstract
A fin-stabilized projectile for a smooth bored mortar or rifled gun is coated with a synthetic resin base lacquer containing a finely pulverized salt, which at the moment of firing is decomposed, thereby absorbing heat and creating a protective surface boundary layer of steam. The salt may be ammonium oxalate, suitable lacquers being based on a phenolic resin, wood oil and stand oil. A further, heat reflecting layer, containing titanium dioxide, may be applied. The parts of the projectile which will contact the weapon barrel may be metallized by spraying stainless or fireproof steel thereon, before application of the lacquer layer. The lacquer may, if desired, comprise a melamine formaldehyde resin and molybdenum sulphide.
