Abstract
920,919. Casting composite articles. ERICO PRODUCTS Inc. July 20, 1961, No. 26401/61. Class 83 (1). A mould for use in making cast welding connections with molten metal produced by an exothermic reaction comprises a frangible disposable cylindrical body 1 having a large aperture 2 at one end, a small aperture 5 at the other end, and an intermediate mould cavity 3, the aperture 5 receiving one member e.g. an earth rod 6, to be welded and the mould cavity having opening transversely into it a further aperture 7 to permit insertion of a member e.g. a conductor 10, to be welded to the member 10. A dished sheet metal disc 11 separates the crucible portion 2 from the mould cavity 3. The mould may be of fine clay, bonded calcined dolomite, resin-bonded sand &c. and may be supplied as a package in a polyethylene bag 15, complete with a packet 14 of desiccant, the sealing member 13 of the pipe cleaner type and a cartridge containing the exothermic material and ignition powder. After casting the mould is broken away from the joint. In a modification the crucible portion is separable from the mould portion and made of e.g. graphite so as to be reusable.
