Abstract

Maleic anhydride is made by contacting, at an elevated temperature, a gaseous mixture comprising one or more of the C4 hydrocarbons butene-1, butene-2 and butadiene and oxygen with an oxidation catalyst having the formula <FORM:0920854/IV(a)/1> wherein x is from 3 to 24, y is from 1 to 12, and z is from 0.1 to 1.0, the quantity of oxygen in the mixture being less than that necessary for complete oxidation of the said hydrocarbon in the mixture, i.e. the molar ratio of oxygen to C4 hydrocarbon being less than 6/1 , preferably in the range 3/1 to 1/10 . It is advantageous to work in the presence of a gaseous diluent, such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide or steam, the preferred source of oxygen being air. The reaction temperature may be between 250 DEG and 600 DEG C. and the contact time is generally in the range of 0.2 seconds. The catalyst may be employed in a fixed bed or a fluidized bed. The preparation of the catalyst is described in Specification 920,853.
