Abstract

Hardeners for epoxy resins comprise compounds of formula <FORM:0920514/IV(a)/1> in which X represents -CH2NH2 or a substituted acid amide group, any substituent in the amide group still containing a primary or secondary amine group, Y is hydrogen or the grouping <FORM:0920514/IV(a)/2> m is 7 or 8 and n is 8 when m is 7, and 7 when m is 8 (see Group IV(b) ). The hardeners are non-volatile and of low viscosity and are suitable for solvent-free lacquers, casting or laminating material or reaction adhesive. Examples describe the use of a mixture of 1:9 and 1:10 diaminooctadecanes, a mixture of 9- and 10-amino-stearic acid amino-amides, and a polyamido-amide as hardeners for an epoxy resin derived from diphenylolpropane and epichlorhydrin to give cast, moulded or a film-forming coating, or for solutions of the resin in xylene-methylisobutyl ketone and xylenemethyl glycol to give film-forming lacquers.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formula, <FORM:0920514/IV(a)/1> in which X represents -CH2NH2 or a substituted acid amide group, any substituent in the amide group still containing a p- or secamine group, and Y represents hydrogen or the grouping <FORM:0920514/IV(a)/2> m is 7 or 8 and n is 8 when m is 7 and n is 7 when m is 8. the compounds are prepared by reacting an unsaturated fatty acid amine with hydrocyanic acid in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid, and hydrolysing the formylamino compound, or alternatively by reacting an unsaturated fatty acid with hydrocyanic acid in the presence of sulphuric acid, hydrolysing the formylamino compound to the amino acid and if desired reacting after esterification, either with a polyamine to the corresponding amino amide or converting into a urea compound by reaction with phosgene in the presence of an acidbinding agent and then reacting with a polyamine to a polyamide amine. The products, for example, a mixture of 1 : 9 and 1 : 10 diamino octadecanes, 9- and 10-aminostearic acids, and a polyamino-amide derived from the action of diethylene triamine on carbonyldi(aminostearic acid) are non-volatile and of low viscosity and may therefore be used as hardeners for epoxy resins in solvent-free lacquers or as casting and laminating, or adhesive resins.
