Abstract

Reactive compositions contain (1) urethanes of the general formula <FORM:0921423/IV(a)/1> wherein the aromatic nucleus may be further substituted by a lower alkyl substituent and R1 and R2 are aliphatic and/or aromatic radicals which may be further substituted by nonreactive substituents or R1 or R2 is an alkyl radical containing one or more further urethane groups and (2) either (a) N-aminoalkyl-imidazolines containing at least two active amine hydrogen atoms, the alkyl residues of which may contain or be interrupted by further amino groups, obtained by reaction at elevated temperatures of aliphatic polyamines with saturated and/or unsaturated and/or polymerized unsaturated fatty acids or dicarboxylic acids, any of which acids may be substituted by amino groups or (b) N-aminoalkylamides containing at least two active amine hydrogen atoms obtained by reaction at moderately elevated temperatures of aliphatic polyamines with saturated and/or unsaturated and/or polymerized unsaturated fatty acids or dicarboxylic acids, any of which acids may be substituted by amino groups. The two components are usually combined as solutions in organic solvents. In the examples the components utilized are urethanes the reaction product of 1 mol. of trimethylol propane and 3 mols. of 2:4- or 2:6-toluylene diisocyanate (or a mixture of these isomers) followed by reaction with 3 mols. of phenol; a similar product prepared from isothymol instead of the phenol; the reaction product of 1 mol. of 2:4- or 2:6-toluylene diisocyanate and 2 mol. of phenol; the bisurethane obtained from 2:4- or 2:6-toluylene diisocyanate and ethanol N-aminoalkylimidazolines the bis-imidizoline obtained at 310 DEG C. from triethylene tetramine and di- and trimerized tall oil fatty acid N-aminoalkylamides the reaction product at 130 DEG -160 DEG C. of diethylene triamine and di- and tri-merized tall oil fatty acid; the reaction product of diethylene triamine and 9-amino-stearic acid; the reaction acid; the reaction product of diethylene triamine and a -nonyl sebacic acid or a -octylnonane dicarboxylic acid; the reaction product of diethylene triamine and di- and tri-merized linseed oil fatty acid. Specified solvents are methyl isobutyl ketone, methyl ethyl ketone, ethylene glycol monoethyl or monomethyl ether, xylene, toluene, chlorobenzene, methylene chloride, cyclohexanone, ethyl or amyl acetate, ethanol and isopropanol-usually in the form of mixtures in the final composition as each component is dissolved in a different solvent. An epoxy resin such as a bis-phenol A-epichlorohydrin reaction product may be incorporated into the composition. The compositions may be pigmented, e.g. with titanium dioxide. Uses: Coating compositions, adhesives and cast-moulded products.
