The neck 20, Fig. 3, of a bag 21 is closed by a metallic clip 22 so shaped that it embraces the neck as a cylindrical helix, Fig. 2. The clips are obtained from a metallic strip 26, Fig. 4, by cutting along the line 25, each clip comprising aligned side parts 23, 24 forming an angle other than 90 degrees with respect to a central part 22 The neck 20 of the bag is closed by introducing it into a slot 33, Fig. 8, of a clip applying device to partly close the neck, and by then advancing a reciprocable anvil member 30 to the position shown in Fig. 9 to tightly press the neck in the slot 33. A second reciprocable member 29 is then advanced to move a clip 22 previously curved to a position where it embraces the neck 20 and is finally squeezed therearound between the member 29 and the anvil member 30. Clip feed and cutting mechanism. The metallic strip 26a, Fig. 12, bent to C-shape, moves downwardly into the bag closing device on a fixed rod 27. As the reciprocable member 29 moves to the right it shears off the bottom clip from the strip 26a. During the final crimping action by the member 29 a cam shaped surface 41 thereon raises a roller 42 of a ratchet device 38 acting on the strip 26a such that the ratchet engages the next clip portion of the strip 26a. As the member 29 returns to its initial position, the roller 42 descends and the ratchet 38 draws the strip 26a downwardly.
