Abstract
919,988. Axial-flow fans. MARSICO, C. July 8, 1960 [July 11, 1959], No. 23926/60. Class 110(1). A fan comprises rotatable blades radially mounted on a hub having a bore concentric with the axis of rotation of the fan, a helicallythreaded member engaging helical threads in the bore whereby axial displacement of the member along the bore causes rotation of the member, a gear-wheel connected to the member meshing with a gear-wheel connected to each blade to rotate the blades to alter their pitch, means being provided for urging the member to a datum position in the bore. In an axial-flow fan, the impeller blades are carried by radially-disposed pivot pins 2 each carrying a bevel pinion 7 meshing with bevel gears 8, 8<SP>1</SP>. Fluid under pressure can be supplied through a pipe 26 to a capsule 13 to move a cylindrical member 12 axially against the action of a spring 24. The spring force can be adjusted by means of a screw 25. Helical ribs on the outside of member 12 engage helical grooves formed in a stationary bush 9, whereby the member 12 is caused to rotate as it moves axially. This rotation is imparted through a key 17 to the hub 15 of bevel gear 8, whereby an increase in the fluid pressure effects a decrease in the pitch of the impeller blades. The variation of pitch may be such that the air flow can be reversed.
