Abstract

919,786. Fluid-pressure brakes. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. Dec. 19, 1960, No. 43589/60. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XL (c)] In a vehicle, e.g. an agricultural tractor, having a pair of ground-engaging wheels driven through differential gearing, a control device is provided in conjunction with separately-actuable brakes on the wheels which in response to a predetermined difference of speed of the wheels applies the brake of the faster wheel, so that should a wheel tend to spin, e.g. when on loose or wet earth, driving torque is maintained to the other wheel as a result of the application of the brake on the spinning wheel. As shown, wheels 17, 18 of a tractor are driven through half-shafts 15, 16 and a differential 14, and are provided with brakes 19, 20 operated by separate compressed air cylinders 37, 38. Air is supplied to the cylinders for normal braking by a driver control via conduits 41, and is also supplied automatically by solenoid valves 32, 33 controlled in response to said difference of speeds of the wheels, exhausting of air from the cylinders being effected by a pressure-sensitive relief valve when either supply is cut off. The speedresponsive control is effected by generators 22 driven by the respective wheels and having their outputs balanced by potentiometers 25, 26, as a result of which the bases and emitters of two transistors 27, 28 are maintained at the same voltage so long as the wheels are rotating at the same speed, so that the transistors do not conduct. When the speed of one wheel increases relative to that of the other wheel the corresponding transistor is made conducting and current flows via its collector to the appropriate one of two relays having contacts 29, 30. When the difference in speed of the two wheels is more than a predetermined amount this current is sufficient to operate the relay, which thereupon closes its contacts to supply current from a battery 31 to the appropriate solenoid valve 32 or 33 which applies the brake of the faster wheel.
