Abstract

A method of polymerizing vinyl fluoride comprises forming a dispersion of vinyl fluoride and a liquid in which the polymerized vinyl fluoride is substantially insoluble, subjecting the resulting emulsion to gamma radiation at a pressure below 1,000 p.s.i.a., and recovering polymerized vinyl fluoride. Specified liquids are water, benzene, toluene, aliphatic alcohols and ketones, sulphonated aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, and C5-14 aliphatic hydrocarbons. The radiation intensity may vary from 1X104 to 1X107 reps. The molecular weight of the polymer varies according to the liquid used, thus water containing dodecylbenzene sulphonate leads to higher molecular weight polymers than aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons.
