Abstract

919,396. Selective punching machines. SMITHCORONA MARCHANT Inc. Jan. 26, 1961 [Jan. 27, 1960], No.3053/61. Class 31 (2). A machine for perforating a tape 110 comprises a series of pivotally-mounted spring-biased punch operating levers 40 which are retained by the combined action of a cyclically operable cam 60 and of latches 42, or 50, forming part of the pivotally-mounted spring-biased armatures 26, or 28, of selectively-operable electromagnets 12, the arrangement being such that when an electromagnet is energized, the corresponding latch 42, or 50, is raised and the cam permitted to rotate to release the corresponding lever 40 and enable its toe end 64 to act, through an impact member 108, on a ball 106 to press the tape against the cutting edge 125, fig. 3, of an opening 122 in a die insert 104 so as to punch a hole in the tape. At the same time, a feed hole is punched in the tape by means of the toe end 78, Fig. 8, of a pivotallymounted spring-biased lever 72 acting, through an impact member 109, on a ball 107 to press the tape against the cutting edge of an opening 123 in the die insert. After each punching operation, the cam 60 rotates to re-set the levers 40, 72 in their pre-punching positions. The shaft 80 of the cam is driven by an electric motor 90 through a friction clutch 82, the driven element 81 of which is magnetically released from a latching position to permit rotation of the shaft 80. The tape is fed stepwise between successive punching operations by means of a sprocket-wheel 136, Fig. 9, mounted on the same shaft as a ratchet-wheel 134 with which co-operates a spring-influenced pawl 154 mounted by means of an eccentric screw 150 on an arm 148 of a pivotally-mounted spring-biased lever 74 co-operable with a cyclically operable cam 130.
