In a public address system for an auditorium a plurality of electrically interconnected microphones 6 are arranged in a vertical row, to give a polar diagram as indicated by lines 8, and are positioned in the acoustic shadow of at least two separate loud-speakers 7 energized by the amplified output of the microphones. The microphones can pick up both the comments from the principal speaker 3 and from the audience and the amplifier may be provided with automatic gain control to equalize the resulting outputs.
